AIDA is going to be performed in compliance with the original idea of the composer, which means in open air and under the blue clear sky, with more than 350 performers on the stage – musicians in the orchestra, members of the choir , national and international soloists, ballet dancers, and huge number of extras for the well-known scene of soldiers marching.
In the year when the whole world is marking the jubilee of 120 years since Verdi’s death, the Opera of the Serbian National Theatre is giving the performance of that epic opera on 15th September exactly in the same way as the composer imagined — in the open air under the clear blue sky between the walls of the Petrovaradin Fortress and based on the three great anniversaries, i.e. 160 years of the theatre, 120 years since the renowned composer died and 150 years since the opera AIDA was first performed.
”Aida“ is the story about passion which boils under the Egyptian sky. It is the story about the the clash between two empires, two religions, two mentalities, but above all about the clash beween two women in love. Both of them are princesses, but also slaves – the slaves of love and passion. The central point of their clash is a young charismatic military leader, a skilled strategist, a winner on the battlefield, a master in the art of warfare, but clumsy in court intrigues. These are big stakes – how to make a little pawn a bishop, and then a bishop the king. In the game of love and war, his stairs are two princesses belonging to two warring empires “, explains the play director Aleksandar Nikolić.
