The opera Orpheus and Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the libretto by Ranieri de Calzabigi, conducted by the guest from Bulgaria Diana Chobanov, directed by Aleksandar Nikolić and choreographed by Aleksandar Ilić, premiered with great success on June 23 on the Grand Stage.
The work is based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, a story talking about love and loss, but also about how much someone is willing to sacrifice for their love. Orpheus proves that love and feelings should be believed in, even when it seems really impossible because he defies the laws of life and death.
In Nikolić’s setting, Orpheus, as a charismatic individual, is very similar to the people of the modern world; he refuses to accept and understand natural processes such as life and death, he even manages to overcome them. That victory seems like a triumph of human strength and is optimistic at the beginning…
The champions of the Opera of the National Theatre – mezzo-soprano Aleksandra Angelov (Orpheus), and sopranos Snezana Savičić Sekulić (Eurydice) and Sofia Pižurica (Eros), performed with three roles in this rarely performed chamber opera.
The Choir, Orchestra and Ballet of the National Theatre took part in the performance.
At the end of the performance, the extraordinary artistic team was rewarded with several-minute stormy applause and shouts of “bravo” by the enthusiastic audience.
