LECTURE OF PROF. DR MIOMIR PETROVIĆ IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE STREET MOVIES FESTIVAL

As part of the first international Street Movies Festival, Prof. Miomir Petrović, Ph.D., will hold a lecture on the Information Theory of Film. The lecture will be held on September 20, 2024, in room 307 at the Institute for Artistic Play, starting at 2:00 p.m.

The Street Movies Festival takes place from September 18 to 22, 2024 in Belgrade, in the Youth Center of Belgrade and the MTS hall, and shows films whose action takes place on city streets, roads, as well as all those in which the city is the main character.

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Miomir Petrović, Cognitive Theory of Film, talks about one of the possible approaches to the reception of a feature film work. The lecture talks about the processes that, most often through the art of film editing, take place in the unconscious and non-rational part of our psychology. Accustomed that when we enjoy a film drama by following the action, characters, spaces, photography, acting bravado or action mise-en-scène, we often do not see how on the semiotic level the order of two frames, one after the other, in a microsecond, these changes affect our associative arc of thought. In other words, how much unconscious material is registered alongside what we see.

The cognitive theory of film, therefore, speaks to our “horizon of expectation” of further events in the film and its importance. The film is what it creates in us as a cognitive-emotional material and not only what is seen on the screen.

During the lecture, we will also see clips from important world film hits.
