Simon Mayer (Austria 1984), in his work insists on the dialogue between cultures – on the productive conflict of tradition and modernity. Meyer is a classically trained dancer, but also a performance artist and musician, who in his work travels between genres, as well as between the cultural worlds that shaped him: from rural folk culture to the Vienna State Ballet, and to Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, with whom he made several productions before making a name for himself as a solo artist on the international dance scene. In the creative process, Simon Mayer pursues free artistic expression, mixing all kinds of genres and styles to enable sensual, exciting forms of performance. Time and again, the group’s dynamic interactions lead to trance-like moments where perception and physical strength combine to create a mesmerizing rhythm. Gravity and seriousness give way to playful improvisations, giving the audience the joy of discovering performers inventing new sounds, lighting effects and choreography.
